After B'Kara won over Marsaxlokk in the first game, Valletta had to win three points against neighbours and eternal rivals Floriana to be first in the qualifications.
They managed to do this thanks to Frank Temile just before the whistle of the first half. It was a derby poor of ideas and actions. The result was the most important for Valletta and they achieved this without making an impression.
As they had to fight in the game against B'Kara to save a point at the end, even Valletta found it difficult to win the match against Floriana. Valletta hardly did they use the sides and therefore actions always found the Floriana wall.
Floriana were organized tactically to stop the actions from Valletta, but when they were losing they did not have solutions in the attack and this was the biggest defect by the Greens yesterday.
It is difficult to say who made it through such a difficult game with lengthy periods of confusion. However for Valletta Temile, Grioli and David Camilleri were the best with the former achieving a goal from a free kick.
For Floriana Cassar and Tretski worked hard, whilst Levniac was deluding in midfield.
Valletta had Steve Bezzina and Backhaus missing since they are suspended and instead Brian Agius and Ian Zammit returned.
Floriana who left Bolasie on the bench were very aggressive in the first minutes of the match with Christian Caruana as the central point, with Mano Micallef and Trevor Cilia on the sides.
It was Caruana himself who shot to Hogg after just a few minutes with a shoot from the side of the box, with Hogg not catching but Kenneth Scicluna cleared the danger.
After this start Valletta took the game in their hands although the supremacy could not infiltrate the Greens' organized defense. For Valletta there were no more solutions except long crosses towards Moneserolo and Temile however these were never effective. The first conclusion by Valletta towards the adversary's goal post came in mid half when Josef Mifsud shot a high free kick of David Caruana however his header went too high.
In the 26th minute, a good chance by Sunday Eboh who shot from a few metres high after a free kick by Brincat, paniced Valletta's defense.
In the 32nd minute the first shoot of Valletta in the Floriana's post and the first save by Agius after Monesterolo's shoot. The game continued in a confused manner with Valletta in the upper hand. When everything seemed that the firs half was going to finish without goals, the goal from Valletta came in the extra time. When a precise free kick by David Camilleri was shot and Frank Tamile headed well towards Agius hitting the horizontal post and turning in.
In the second half Moesterolo shot and missed. In the 55th minute Krsteski lost the ball in front of the box, Giglio passed to Monesterolo whose shot was intercepted by Briffa.
Now Valletta had started to play better by finding more space and started to be faster when the quickness of Temile was impressive.
After an hour of play two tries by Floriana from Mano Micallef from far away and Krsteski with two shots far from aim arrived.
Danilo Doncic entered Bolasie and Ryan Darmanin to give more energy to Floriana's attacker who looked really weak. Surprisingly, a few moments after, Valletta's coach Paul Zammit substituted Temile with Dyson Falzon.
The last moments of the match continued with Floriana trying to get close to Hogg, whilst Valletta although having favorable situations they did not make use of them.
